From Victims to Victors —Back to Kabul —after Twenty Years
During last three decades, Afghanistan witnessed rise, fall and rise of the taliban, a force that changed the paradigms of war and resistance. In early 90s, when the taliban ran through Afghanistan, the world saw them in absolute awe. They were portrayed as barbaric forces, who were against modernization including education for women.
It is pertinent to remind the world, especially the journalist community that the taliban emerged as an indigenous force which rose against the evils prevailing in the seminaries in Afghanistan. Their leaders like Mullah Omer were deadly against such evils and deeply perturbed as well. They talked to their sympathizers about the evil which had plagued the seminaries, spreading its tentacles in other segments of the society as well. The sympathizers guided them to talk to Professor Rabbani about that nuisance. However, being a Tajik, Professor Rabbani did not have any substantial authority over non Pashtuns.
It was against this backdrop that the taliban ventured in and started to eliminate all evil mongers and their facilitators. The people of Afghanistan, who deeply believe in core religious values, supported the taliban, being fed up of those evils, plaguing Afghanistan. After rising to power, the taliban restored peace in Afghanistan and curtailed kidnapping, stealing and other vices. They punished the culprits in public to give a lesson. An important fact requires a special mention here that four core principles formulate Afghan culture. These core principle include: presidential system, minimal force, loia Jirga, a system based on Sharia and Jirga system which have worked well for centuries. The numerical strength of Talibans is believed to have around 75000, staunchly believes in this core philosophy .
From a strategic standpoint, the taliban(in 90s) launched their offence from Kandahar and advanced to control Afghanistan. This time, after twenty years of valiant struggle and unprecedented sacrifices, they (the Taliban) have revisited their strategies, militarily , politically and diplomatically as well. This time they launched their offence along the border of the central Asian states and Iran .
It was very important that the Doha Agreement was signed between the Islamic state of Afghanistan and the US . That agreement did not include the Afghan government, and scores of other fighting factions. Now the US must honor the commitment which they made in front of the entire world community. To betray that agreement with usher yet another era of death and destruction and the crisis would certainly spill beyond the borders.
The taliban are not hungry for opulence and palaces. During their last feat to power, they did not harm or plunder the palaces. It is very important that areas under the control of warlords had plushy palaces and all luxurious items in the world. But the taliban did not capture or harm them. Now the talibans appear to have learnt more, showing more acumen. They have not vowed to abandon women and force them to stay within the four walls. They have promised to ensure education for women and equal opportunities to grow.
Former president Ashraf Ghani has left Kabul for Tajikistan ,along with his important aides. Kabul is all set to receive the taliban who were compelled to leave twenty years ago in the wake of the US invasion. Now, the Taliban would hold power and Shura will take over . The takeover of Shura means: the system based on Islamic Principles . The Sharia laws will be enforced in all affairs of life and systems. Here it is very significant to bring to the fore that twenty years ago, those who facelifted the butcher and unleash brutalities in Afghanistan, they would also be dealt with, following the sharia laws. The police, the judges and all those who victimized, more likely would face the inevitable end. This model would spread across the entire Afghanistan. It means: there won’t be any peace which is being envisaged and anticipated by many. The taliban have given a week to the British and the US to evacuate their staff, workers and local supporters, announcing that Doha Treaty is intact. For now the wounds for the taliban are quite fresh and alive. The coming two decades (perhaps) would witness revenge for murderers across Afghanistan before return of any possible normalcy.
